Barreiros, the Lamuyo resistant to powdery mildew

The new generation of Lamuyo peppers from Seminis with resistance to Lt is here.

In recent years, talking about Lamuyo peppers in the autumn cycle meant talking about Baquero. The variety from Seminis is the leader in production and hardiness. An ‘all-rounder’ that adapts to all types of growing conditions. To improve this, Seminis has worked over a 6-year period to develop a new generation that also incorporates resistance to powdery mildew (Lt). The result has arrived and it is called Barreiros.

Francisco Tomillero, in charge of Pepper Development, picks out the main characteristics of the first material from this new generation. “It is a highly productive variety. If we compare it to Baquero, it is on the same level, but with improved quality, with a +4-6% in July plantations. It has a slightly hardier plant and, although it incorporates resistance to Lt, it does not sacrifice any production or quality.” The recommended plantation date in Almeria is from the 1st to the 25th of July, although from the 10th to the 20th is when it achieves its greatest balance between plant hardiness, production and fruit quality.

In a pre-commercial phase, Barreiros has obtained very good results and comments from producers due to its profitability and resistance. “Those who tried it last year are repeating. With this innovation, we hope to present profitable solutions in the everyday work of Lamuyo farmers.”

As a new development in this campaign, we will be able to see a new product that will complement the autumn range with resistance to powdery mildew. Its plant is slightly more compact and with greater ease of setting, for earlier dates (April-May and June).

Arael, now established

In California peppers, Arael is becoming established in early June plantations. Its fruit (G) are ideal for cooperatives and they have good tolerance to blossom end rot, a problem that has been rife in the fields, showing the advantages of Arael’s quality. “It has a very high quality percentage, above others. And it is suitable for a subsequent spring cycle, as it ripens very quickly in the winter and gives a high percentage in red.”

Arael will be followed by another variety, also with resistance to powdery mildew. Its plant is hardier and easier to handle, therefore it is recommended for the end of June up to the 10th of July. With larger calibre and production than Arael, it is good for local markets. Highly tolerant to blossom end rot, the endurance of its fruit on the plant and the high percentage of Category I stand out.
